I go to ALDI every Monday with Isaac. My favorite yogurt hasn't been in stock for months. I don't think it's coming back. Even so, I look every week.
One of Henry's friends, Eli, passed away this month after a three-year battle with cancer. It's hard to imagine how difficult it is for a family to lose a son and brother at this tender age. Eli was a wonderful young person, and he has an amazing, loving family. I think about them a lot more than I say. I bet their hearts will be heavy for a long time.
Yesterday I went to Target with Isaac to get a printer cartridge of black ink. The timing was critical because when he printed off the grocery list that we use on Saturdays, most of it was missing due to the low ink. On the way home -- and we always have to go on Main Street, even though it's out of the way -- I realized I had accidentally bought a color cartridge, not a black one. Isaac wasn't very happy with me when we headed back to the store. But after returning the color one and grabbing the black one, we put a bag of Reese's eggs into our cart, so all was not lost.
Why are so many girls wearing shirts that are so short? I don't get it. I want a full-length shirt because nobody needs to see my abs. Also, do I have abs?
This month I heard CFHS Jazz One play in their district competition, and I saw them play again last weekend in downtown Cedar Falls when they opened for the Iowa Jazz Composers Orchestra. I love the band and am thrilled Henry has had this experience the past three years. This group is super special. They have only one more performance, and then it's over for the school year. I don't want to think about it. The next performance is next week at Iowa Jazz Championships. Nobody can complain about ending the season there. It's the best scenario. Go out on a high note, as the saying goes. But Henry will be going out on a low note, as he plays the bass trombone . . .
This month I baked my friend Ann's Cuban bread, which is perfect toasted and slathered with butter and jam. Baking that bread always brings my friend back for a moment.
I laugh about so many random things. At dinner the other night, someone said, "You think so many things are funny." Yep. I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.
Noah was home for spring break. He hadn't been home since January, so it was a nice reunion. Isaac was quite concerned that Noah get a haircut ASAP. Fortunately he had an appointment lined up. His hair is really thick like mine.
It's been cold in March, but today it was 66 degrees on my morning walk, the air full of humidity due to an impending storm. My hair was totally bonkers when I came home. I sat on the deck wearing a t-shirt and leggings and cut it with some thinning shears. I have so much hair that I can't screw it up too badly. Thinning gets rid of the bulk, not the length. Henry asked if the birds came and made a nest out of it. He always knows the right thing to say.
Henry has made his choice for college. I'm going to miss him when he spreads his wings this fall, although he keeps telling me he's going to live with me here in the nest forever. I'm happy when I think about what's next for him. He's ready for freedom and new opportunities. Change is in the air.
